The
Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello

Anthony Lucas' The Mysterious Geographic Exploration of Jasper Morello is a visually impressive piece ingeniously combining many animation techniques. Its use of dark character silhouettes against elaborate backgrounds evokes a fantastic imaginary world. The aesthetic style of the piece mercifully recalls the great innovators of Eastern European animation rather than the razzle-dazzle of today's cartoon entertainments. However, I am disturbed by the infatuation of a current generation of Australian animators with the full baggage of conventional character, plot, backstory, morally dramatic issues, and so on. Jasper Morello would have been far better as a more abstract piece. The script by Lucas and Mark Shirrefs suffers from laborious plotting and an overripe voice-over narration. © Adrian Martin December 2005 |
