Sophia Turkiewicz's film (co-scripted by Thomas Keneally of Schindler's List [1993] fame), about Polish migrants struggling with an intolerant 1950s Australia, loads all its bases in advance. While the victimised main characters (played by Gosia Dobrowolska and Ivar Kants) have behind them a rich culture, a traumatic history and a romantic sensibility, most of the Aussies on show are blank, superficial, bureaucratic oafs. The film's attempt to place the complexities of social history within the framework of a love-versus-family melodrama is passionless, poorly realised and uninvolving.
